The question of energy is certainly the biggest problem we have to solve today. The part of the world energy demand which is ascribed directly to buildings is about 50%. If it would also include the indirect energy demand of buildings of the remaining 50%, the total value would be significantly higher.
The solution to this problem can just be found in developing new energy sources - regenerative or not – or rather in optimizing technical systems of buildings. Both approaches are important, but much more important is to decrease the energy demand. This will also not be achieved through the reduction of the level of living in developed countries, or through abandonment of an adjustment of the level of living in developing countries.
The focus of our research lies in exploring new fields in holistic planning of buildings, with the goal to maximize the energy efficiency and the level of comfort. Computer simulations constitute the methodological emphasis of the research. Current projects are for example “Form follows Energy”, The Role of Tall Buildings in the Sustainability of European Cities”, Energy Efficient Ventilation of Office Buildings” and “High Technology Double Skin Building Envelopes”.
